HRCP wants proactive govt measures to curb violence against minorities

Press Release, 14 September 2009

Lahore, September 14: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan on Monday expressed concern over increasing frequency of violent attacks on religious minorities and demanded that the government take proactive measures to prevent such violence.

Reacting to the recent torching of a church in Sambarial, Sialkot district, HRCP said in a press statement: “The Commission has been warning the government of the growing intolerance of religious minorities’ rights and pointing towards the increasing frequency of vigilante actions against them. It has repeatedly expressed concern at attacks on non-Muslims over allegations of blasphemy and desecration of religious scriptures. It is unfortunate that our fears of recurrence of such violence again proved to be true in Sambarial last week.

The government response in the face of a recent spurt in incidents of violence against minorities – mainly belated announcements of financial compensation and some attempts at encouraging reconciliation at the local level – has clearly been insufficient and exclusively reactive.

The Commission would emphasise that another attack targeting the minorities is a question of when, not if, unless the government acknowledges in a meaningful manner the threat extremism and intolerance pose to society, understand the dynamics fuelling the phenomenon and take urgent and effective remedial measures.

The allegations of blasphemy or defiling of religious scriptures, irrespective of their veracity, do not warrant vigilante attacks. Nor do they absolve the government of its primary duty to protect all citizens. Effective prosecution would serve as a deterrent to future attacks, while a lack thereof would encourage impunity.”

  1. Dear Rehman Sahib and Asma Jahangir,

    Many thanks for highlighting this in your live press conference.

    You know I really get numb, what is going on in our Country. The leadership is only interested to make foreign trips. Parliamentarians are just happy to have luxury lifestyle and least bother about this issue.

    Have our countryman (Muslims) they ever highlighted that what (ASAW PBUH) preached about the rights of minority. I guess they all know.
    But simultaneously they do have grudge for the minorities and take personal revenge by applying/trapping others in Blasphemy law.

    Let me tell you to me it is also a blasphemy killing people in a suicide attack. How many of them were “Hafiz-e-Quran”. Kaya yeh Quran ki behurmit nahi, kaya yeh Quran ko Shaheed karnay kay Madratif nahi”! How many mosques get burnt and damage in suicide attacks. Isn’t it comes under blasphemy.

    They are afraid only from .2% minority. Common dear if one have enough faith on his/her religion than nothing to apply such laws. How many Christian channels are operating in our Country? But yet you feel fear.

    For God sake let us live as we love to live in peace. Otherwise………. Just read below a message from book of Corinthians (To me it’s a extract of Bible). This is a message I want to give my Muslim brothers/sisters

    1 Corinthians, Chapter 13:1-13

    1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angles, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.
    2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
    3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.
    4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up;
    5) Does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil;

    6 Does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;
    7 Bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
    8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.
    9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part.
    10 But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.
    11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
    12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.
    13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is LOVE.

    God Bless You.

  3. I heard your Chairperson yesterday on the Kashif Abbasi show, I was floored by her pathetic lack of knowledge with respect to the responsible parties that led to the Jihadi movement and mullaaiat in Pakistan. It was your beloved crooks in Parliament that enacted the laws that declared Ahmadis non-muslims (For which you suffer now as a Nation)

    Pakistan is in the state it is due to civilian martial law admins. For God sakes stop the support of these savage democratic crooks. Your so-called democratic imbiciles that broke up Pakistan run their parties with phoopo/ nanee/bhai behan/mama/chacha/
